Stockpile these Summer Picnic Must-Haves
By Jessica Reinhart
While we absolutely love going on impromptu summer picnics, we simply loath the idea of making last minute runs to the grocery store or (gasp!) grabbing to-go food for our feast. As luck would have it, grocers across the country hold annual sales on all sorts of yummy summer specialties that would be nothing short of perfection for a picnic spread. Just knowing when to look for what can be half the battle. That’s why we strategically scan the grocery store aisles during the months of May through August to see what picnic-worthy goodies we’ll find on sale.
Here are a few summer staples you’ll want to grab the moment they're on sale to get your picnicking stash ready for summer:
May: There’s a reason they call May ‘National BBQ Month’ – it’s the start of the summer season and everyone -- including your local grocery store -- is in a mood to celebrate. So grab your Smokey Joe and be on the lookout for sales on picnic supplies like condiments, hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, cheese, potato chips, soda, charcoal, paper goods, coolers, insect repellent and sunscreen.
June: June is ‘National Dairy Month’, so why not get creative and plan a picnic brunch? This month you’ll wrangle up savings on yogurt, butter, cheese, milk, eggs, and sour cream.
July: Fourth of July brings reason to celebrate, so take note of explosive deals on picnic necessities like BBQ sauce, baked beans, ketchup, mustard, marinade, hot dogs, hamburgers, buns and soda.
August: Although your warm weather festivities may still be in full swing, come August most retailers are deeply discounting summer stock to make way for fall fare. Take advantage of clearance prices on BBQ supplies, charcoal, lighter fluid, sunscreen and insect repellent.
